There was a special election on August 15 for the senate seat formerly held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Did you noticed on their commercials that they all spoke of their Christian values? One promised to filibuster by reading the New Testament in the King James Version! I’ll have to confess that I often roll my eyes when they make such statements, politics being what they are in our fine state. But on the other hand, I’m encouraged that politicians recognize that Alabama is a state that honors Christian values; a state where such values may even help get a person elected to office. Can you imagine someone in California campaigning on a platform that included Christian values? Or New York? The mere mention of those values in those (and other) states would guarantee defeat.
Now, I didn’t necessarily vote for the person who cried “Christian values” the most or the loudest. But it’s a blessing to live in an area where Christianity is, for the most part, a desirable trait. It’s comforting to live where “going to church” is an admiral activity. But let’s not take anything for granted. We are still part of a nation that is marginalizing Christians and distancing itself from God. Pray for the leaders we elect, even those that we didn’t want elected. Pray that God will give them the wisdom and courage to do the right thing.
On a different note, we are having our church picnic on August 26th this year. Because of the timing we are doing something a little unusual: We are renting the giant water slide that we have rented in the past for our Splash Bash. While we can’t open the picnic to the entire community because of the huge amounts of food we would need, we do want you to invite friends and family to join us. We will have horseshoes, corn hole, and other things to do as we fellowship together and I know it will be a fantastic time. It will be here at the church from 5:00 until 7:00. I hope to see you there.
